Employers are being warned against posting job advertisements aimed at temporary visa applicants at the expense of local candidates, following the release of a Fairfax media report.
The report stated that several online advertisements had appeared on job-seeking websites recently, either explicitly asking for temporary work migrants, or stating that candidates on such a visa would be ‘highly preferred.’
In response, Federal Employment Minister Eric Abetz warned that if caught, such employers would be referred to authorities.
“Skilled foreign workers provide an important supplement to the Australian workforce where there is a shortage of workers, however Australian workers always have first preference,” he said in a media report.
Assistant Immigration Minister Michaelia Cash told Fairfax that companies sponsoring 457 visa-holders were subject to strict sponsorship obligations, which included a commitment to non-discriminatory employment and having to demonstrate that suitable Australian candidates were not available.
