India tops Australia’s Migration List

India has again come in as the number one origin country of Australian migrants this year, making up more than twenty per cent of the national annual migration quota.

According to recently-released data from the DIBP, a total of 40 051 Indians migrated to Australia last year, well ahead of traditional source countries China (27 334), and the United Kingdom (21 711).

India has also overtaken the UK as the top country applying for a 457 visa, with 23.3 per cent of the program currently made up of migrants originating from the sub-continent.

Despite the rapid growth, India remains the fourth largest nationality within Australia’s resident population at 369 680, trailing China, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

Over 1.2 million British expats are currently living in Australia, according to ABS data.
